CASA DE LOS CABALLITOS
The Casa de los Caballitos dates back to the 20th century and is named after the ‘taps’ that decorate the upper part of the façade. This house is perhaps the perfect example of what we know today as the historic home of the local bourgeoisie who made their fortune through the production and sale of grapes. In this case, Juan Cantón, a well-known exporter, built it at the beginning of the 20th century and his initials appear on the outside of the house in a clear sign of social ostentation. Its current owner takes care of it down to the smallest detail to keep intact both the exterior and the structure and internal decoration, as well as its original furniture.
PLAZA VALERIANO RODRÍGUEZ
The Plaza Valeriano Rodríguez captivates us with its splendor, standing out as one of the main tourist icons of Terque. This charming, vibrant and colorful plaza is imbued with an unparalleled magic that makes it a truly special place.
In addition, inside it, we can find an artisan well that was found during the restoration works of the plaza in 2010.
IGLESIA DE SANTIAGO
The Church of Santiago Apóstol is one of the most emblematic places of worship in Terque. This Renaissance-style church dates back to the 16th century and is located in the centre of the town, in the Plaza de la Constitución. It was built in the 16th century, during the time of Arab domination in the Iberian Peninsula. Its Renaissance style can be seen in the details of its façade, in the bell tower and in the main altar, decorated with baroque altarpieces. Inside there are numerous works of religious art, such as altarpieces, sculptures and paintings, dating from different periods.
BAROQUE HOUSES OF TERQUE
The flourishing bourgeoisie of the time is reflected in the sophisticated baroque houses that adorn Calle Real. This street surprises us with its well-preserved buildings, allowing us to appreciate every detail and immerse ourselves in one of the most elegant corners of this charming town in the Alpujarra of Almería. In addition, the vibrant 19th-century buildings welcome us with their splendor and attention to detail, inviting us to continue exploring and enjoying the magic that Terque offers.
MUSEUMS OF TERQUE
Terque certainly offers a wide variety of attractions and experiences. Among them, exploring the museums of Terque is an essential activity. These museums make up a fascinating set that immerses us in the historical identity of Almería, transporting us to bygone eras and providing us with authentic and unforgettable moments.
The museums of Terque include the Ethnographic Museum, the Provincial Museum of the Uva de Barco, the Textile Shop “La Modernista”, the Museum of Popular Writing and the Cave of San José. Each of them offers a unique perspective on the rich history and culture of the region.
LA ERMITA DE LA CRUZ
The Ermita de la Cruz, located at the highest point of Terque, oversees the charms of the town and invites us to enjoy its impressive views from there.
Formerly known as the Ermita de San José, this hermitage is the jewel of Terque, standing out at the top of the Cerro de la Cruz. From its position, it protects both Terque in front and the neighboring town of Alhabia from its rear. In addition, it is relevant to mention that the festival of the Cross is celebrated here.
PUBLIC LAUNDRY
As soon as you come across this monument, you know what style it is: completely Arabic. It was originally built in the 19th century, although it was remodelled in the 20th and 21st centuries. Today, to the delight of tourists, it offers those inimitable horseshoe-shaped arches so typical of its exquisite architecture. “The Lavadero” is one of those historical treasures, this time made of brick and stone, that the locals hold dear, since the aforementioned remodelling was done with materials from the town itself. Inside, the liquid element of the Andarax River continues to flow under a cover of immaculate, smooth white colour with brick edges. Arabic essence that is mixed in this monument whose waters are said to be among the best in the region.
